Bruce was born into a musical family, with their father having previously worked as a musician. Before Hornsby graduated from James Blair High School in 1973, he and his siblings began learning music. After that, he studied music at the University of Richmond before going on to Berklee College of Music and the University of Miami. Bruce and his elder brother Bobby formed the band “Bobby Hi-Test and the Octane Kids” in 197They played a variety of covers, mainly by the Grateful Dead, until Bruce graduated in 197He went home and played in local clubs for three years before relocating to Los Angeles. He began composing for 20th Century Fox while there, and later worked as a session musician for Sheena Easton. Bruce Hornsby and the Range was established in 1984, and the following year he was signed to RCA Records. Two years later, he recorded the top-of-the-charts smash “The Way It Is”; the song’s success would eventually help it become a part of other rap songs, as well as reaching multi-platinum status, and Bruce would go on to record “Mandolin Rain,” another hit. He won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1987, and he became renowned for his blend of bluegrass, jazz, and rock. They published “Scenes from the Southside,” their second album, to great acclaim. Soon after, Hornsby joined the Grateful Dead, which eventually led to the disbandment of Bruce Hornsby and the Range.
